Choosing a tradesperson

How to choose the right plumber in Cardiff

Choosing a plumber means trusting someone with your home, your money and a problem you want sorted properly. A smart van and a five-star rating are a start—but there are a few more useful checks to make before booking.

Choose someone with the right experience

A bathroom installation, an intermittent boiler fault and a blocked waste pipe require different skills. Ask whether the plumber regularly handles the type of work you need. For larger projects, look at examples of similar completed work and ask who will manage any other trades involved.

Check qualifications and registrations

For gas work, check that the engineer is Gas Safe registered and qualified for the specific work involved. Check their ID card and verify their details through the official Gas Safe Register. Gas Safe registration relates to gas work; it isn’t a general endorsement of every plumbing or bathroom-fitting skill.

Membership of organisations such as CIPHE or APHC can provide additional reassurance, but check any claimed membership directly. No badge replaces relevant experience, clear communication and evidence of good work.

Read the reviews—not just the score

Look for recent reviews describing jobs similar to yours. Do customers mention clear explanations, tidy workmanship, reliability and how problems were handled? Those details tell you more than a star rating alone. Personal recommendations are useful too: ask what work was done and whether the customer would use the business again.

Compare the scope as well as the price

For planned work, get the proposed work and price in writing. Check what is included, what is excluded and whether VAT is included in the total. For a bathroom or boiler installation, clarify materials, waste removal, making good and relevant certification.

For repairs, ask about diagnostic charges, labour rates and how additional work will be authorised. An engineer may need to investigate before giving a reliable repair price. The cheapest quote isn’t necessarily poor, and the highest isn’t automatically better. Compare the same job.

Ask about insurance and aftercare

Ask whether the business has suitable public liability insurance. For larger work, get any workmanship guarantee in writing and understand what it covers. A manufacturer’s product warranty and an installer’s workmanship guarantee are different things. It should be clear who to contact if something needs attention afterwards.

Look for clear explanations

A good tradesperson should explain what they have found, what they recommend and why. If replacement is suggested, ask whether repair is practical and how the options compare. Sometimes replacement is sensible—but it should come with a reason. Be cautious about pressure to agree immediately or pay a large sum without a clear scope and payment schedule.

Local business or national company?

Either can provide good service. Ask who will attend, whether subcontractors are used, who takes responsibility and how aftercare is handled. Judge the answers alongside experience, reviews and the quotation.
